Prime Minister of England Boris Johnson has made an official about the phased reopening of schools in the United Kingdom. Johnson said that schools will have a phased reopen from June 1, 2020. The Prime Minister added that the government had earlier planned to reopen for the early year students, Reception Year 1 and Year 6.
From June 15, 2020, up to a quarter of Year 10 and Year 12, will be allowed to attend so they will be able to prepare for the exams. The schools in England shut down in March 20, 2020 for the children and the workers due to the coronavirus pandemic in the United Kingdom. Johnson conveyed that he has made the announcement so that the parents, teachers and students could plan for the schools to resume.
The Prime Minister added that a formal decision would be taken that will be a part of the three-week review towards the measures that will be taken post lockdown. The government will be required to follow strict measures as per the guidelines. On the other hand many teachers have expressed concerned over the wide-spread reopen and towards this the PM said that it might not be possible for all the schools to reopen and that the government would support those who are facing a difficulty in reopening as soon as possible.
Johnson also expressed that reopening of the schools is a very crucial part of the next phase of the response of the government towards the pandemic. Meanwhile, after the announcement by Boris Johnson, Kevin Courtney, the joint secretary of the National Education Union expressed that it would not be appropriate to reopen more widely. Courtney appealed to the government to address the concerns with the issues like providing protective equipment for the staff and the procedures for dealing with the outbreak. Not everyone is in support of reopening of the schools from June 1, 2020.
