Dark and moist environments are places where molds thrive and can also appear on your cloths. If your moist cloths are not allowed to be dried properly, then there are chances that they might catch mold and are hard to get rid of. They get dark black patches that look like stains. Here we will be discussing about the steps to get rid of molds from cloths.
1. Pre-treat and scrub – After you have found the mold on the cloths, make sure that you lay them out in the sun which will start to kill the mold. Wear clean gloves and soak the moldy clothes in a bucket of water with half cup of borax or baking soda or one cup of white vinegar. Allow it to soak for at least an hour. Later use a brush to scrub off the mold stains but not hard enough to damage the fabric.
2. Add the moldy fabric in to the washing machine – Now you can toss the moldy cloths to the washing machine with one cup of Borax or white vinegar. Switch on hot water cycle and use your regular laundry detergent. The heat from the cycle helps to kill the mold. Alternatively you can also add half a teaspoon of baking soda to the laundry load that gives a natural fragrance.
3. Dry cloths – After the cycle is finished, take the clothes off the washing machine immediately and dry them under direct sunlight. The UV rays and the heat from the sunlight helps to kill the remaining mold. If you do not have a sunny day or during the cooler season, you can make use of the dryer settings. But make sure that it is suitable for the fabric that you are washing. Even after the dryer session, make sure that they are dried completely to get rid of any moisture which can bring back the mold.
