Disney fans are going to be really happy, because the animated franchise is giving the world a brand new princess, and this time she is Latina! In the past Disney has presented us with many of our childhood princesses, but they were accused of being racist by only representing white heroines – Belle, Ariel, Cinderella, Snow White to name a few. They later released a movie called The Princess And The Frog that brought to us our first African-American star – Princess Tiana.
Now, they have taken a step forward with Elena of Avalor. She is going to feature on the hit TV show for preschoolers, Sofia The First. According to Disney, Princess Elena is “a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairy tale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore”. After her cameo, she is set to have her own show, where the 16-year-old princess will be the star, called Elena Of Avalor.
So, just how will Elena make her appearance? She will be the enchanted one, with a connection to Sofia’s magical amulet. The brave teenager princess was imprisoned in the amulet by an evil sorceress after she tries saving her younger sister. Discovered by Sofia, she needs to be transformed into her human form again so that she can safely return to Avalor. Aimee Carrero is set to voice the princess’ character.
It is a brilliant move being made by Disney, as they are free to create her story and heritage. Avalor will be a beautiful kingdom, with a Hispanic history and caste of darker skin. The production house is yet to announce the release date of her independent show, but from the looks of it, she is already a star.
And we just had to end the article with a collage of our favorite Disney princess, because they are so damn magical!
