Water is an essential element for the human body to function properly. There are two conditions which is dehydration and over hydration and both are not good for the body. Drinking too much water results in over hydration and can lead to fall in electrolyte levels that result in headaches, weakness and nausea. Here are a few signs that you can catch if you are drinking too much water.

1. You drink water even when not thirsty – Thirst is a hint given by the body that it needs water but many people tend to drink water even when they are not thirsty. Over hydration can lead to imbalance of electrolytes in the body. The electrolytes include sodium, potassium and magnesium.

2. Clear urine – People are already aware that dark-colored urine is a sign of dehydration. But that does not mean that you must aim to produce urine that is completely clear. Urine that is pale yellow like lemonade and detects a healthy level of hydration.

3. You wake up many times during the night to urinate – it is normal to urinate six to seven times every 24 hours but if you find yourself urinating too frequently and are also waking up at night, then you must be drinking too much of water.

4. Swollen hand, feet and lips –An imbalance in electrolytes can lead to swelling in hands, feet or lips. This happens when too much of water lowers the sodium level in the blood.

5. Headache – Too much of water leads to sodium imbalance in the blood and causes swelling. The brain cells are the ones which are also vulnerable and it can press the skull leading to a headache.

6. Feeling nauseous for no reason – There are a number of medical conditions that determine nausea but over hydration can upset a stomach as well. You can tend to feel nauseous after you consume plenty of water.

7. Shaky muscles – Too much water can also cause weekness in muscles, spasms or cramps.
