The Polish physicist was born in Warsaw, but had re-located to Paris to finisher studies in physics and mathematics. Marie Curie had worked with her husband Pierre and is also credited for the discovery of radium and polonium.

In the year 1903, the husband and wife duo were awarded with a Nobel Prize for physics along with Henri Becquerel for the discovery of radioactivity. Curie then slowly started promoting the use of radium for therapeutic purpose. During thee first world war, the scientist had developed small mobile x-ray units that could be used to diagnose injuries. The mobile x–ray units were set up close to the battlefront. Marie also worked along with her daughter Irene, who was then 17-years-old, at the casualty clearing stations and also x-raying soldiers for fractures.
