Updated Trends: A new study has given the idea that prolonged sitting and lack of physical activity could be a cause of some of the new cases of colon cancer and breast cancer that are reported every year. On 4th November, 2011,  a new study was presented at the annual conference of the American Institute For Cancer Research, which had mentioned that inactivity was linked to 49,000 cases of breast cancer and also 43,000 cases of colon cancer.

Alpa Patel, an epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society, had observed the data and said that the estimates and  numbers that were mentioned were quite reasonable. Patel, along with her associates, found that inactivity and sitting for too long can be bad for health and is now referred to as the ‘sitting disease’.

More than 123,000 people were investigated and it was found that the participants at a higher risk of dying early the more time they spent sitting. Moreover, the risk was even high for those who were regularly active and spent more time sitting. Patel added that it is not enough even if you indulge in regular exercise.

One has to make sure that you are not just sitting for the whole day. Patel has advised that you have to get up and take breaks from sitting.
