When a person is suffering from depression, he/she does not perform at his/her best at work or in the family. The patient feels like completely cutting themselves off from their surroundings. But sadly there isn’t enough awareness about it in the society and people need to know a few myths that are related to depression.
1. The person might begin to seek attention – The fact is that the condition can become a disorder that can handicap the person as the negative emotions and thoughts take over their mind and body completely. The world might seem like a dark place for them. All they need is support.
2. It is a sign of weakness – The fact is that it is also called as a mood disorder but not a sign of weakness where people could indulge in self-pity. They can be in a sad mood for most of the time of the day. They could have a disturbed sleep and have a poor appetite. Such people can also have suicidal thoughts or death wishes.
3. Depression can happen only due to a traumatic event – The fact is that there are many factors that can cause depression like the loss of a loved one or an accident. If a person has experienced a traumatic event then this can be a triggering factor. It depends completely on the circumstances and even one’s upbringing and the ability of a person to deal with the situation.
