Since the coronavirus outbreak, many companies have allowed many of its employees to work remotely from the comfort of their homes. The measure was taken so as to avoid the spread of the virus which has so far claimed several lives. For the past many weeks, search engine giant Google had also taken this measure and was allowing many of its employees to work remotely. The policy of working remotely has been extended for a number of times as the number of cases kept on increasing everyday. A clarification came from the CEO of Google Sundar Pichai, who said that the employees might have to work remotely for the rest of 2020.
The information on the policy was given to the employees during the all-hands meeting held on May 7, 2020. It was said that the employees who are able to work from home might have to continue doing so as it will help to reduce the spread of the virus. On the other hand the CEO added that the offices will start to reopen from June or July, 2020, for people who have to be working on-site and it is practically impossible for them to work from home. Pichai assured that when that is applied, then there will be several measures that will be put in place and the different office layouts will have people and will be making sure that people do not come in close contact.
The policy to allow Google employees to work from home was started from the Asian countries in early March and then in North America. It was also mentioned that the employees who are critical for the business community continue to work on the sites but the majority of them are not working.
The coronavirus pandemic has not just forced employees to work from home but has also forced the cancallation of many major events that were expected to be held in early 2020.
