After a history of successful artistic films, Martin Scorsese is reportedly being roped in by DC Universe. A The Joker spin-off movie is supposed to be in the works that will be about the origins of the fiend of Gotham. The storyline for the film will carry the tale on how The Joker and Batman first collided and became enemies.

Jared Leto, who played the role of The Joker in 2016’s summer blockbuster, Suicide Squad, will not be a part of this film. He will, however, still be taking on the role of The Joker in the sequel to Suicide Squad as well as the Harley Quinn spin-off. A new actor will be cast in the role, someone who fans hope will be as notoriously brilliant as late actor Heath Ledger who took on the villainous role masterfully in The Dark Knight.

Writers for the upcoming The Joker film are Todd Phillips (The Hangover) and and Scott Silver (8 Mile) who are getting together to curate a timeline set in the ’80s and follows a crime thriller script, with mafia-like scenarios, similar to what we saw in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

With the putting together of Martin Scorsese and Phillips and Silver, expect an ’80s mafia film. Scorsese had made it big with films like Goodfellas and Taxi Driver that had his signature movie making style woven in each of them.

DC and Warner Bros. are looking to expand the DC Universe more than ever. All prominent characters that had otherwise played secondary roles in previous DC films may now get their own spin-offs. And what better place to begin than with two of the most lovable anti-heroes, The Joker and Harley Quinn.

Meanwhile Martin Scorsese’s last film was the contemplative film Silence, starring Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield.
