Updated Trends: A new study has shown that men have to keep a close watch on their weight more then women, so that they do not develop Type 2 diabetes. A team from Glasgow University have found that men can develop the condition at a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) when compared to women.

The study has stressed that weight should be equally distributed in the body. While men tend to store fat in their liver and also around the waist,  women have more subcutaneous fat – that is considered as safe – as it is stored in their hips and thighs.

The researchers also explained that women need to accumulate more fat overall as compared to men, so that they do not develop harmful ailments like diabetes that are otherwise linked to fat. Men can develop Type 2 diabetes when too much of sugar is collected in the blood; when the body fails to manage the sugar levels in different parts of the body. Such a condition is linked to excess fat in some of the organs like the liver and muscles.

An earlier research has also stated that middle-aged men are more prone to such a condition of diabetes linked to fat.

Health organizations across the world urge people to lose excess weight, eat a healthy and balance diet,  and indulge in regular physical activities to reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes.
