The Swiss have finally completed the world’s longest railway tunnel. It took the Swiss workers around 14 years of digging below the Swiss Alps, and today they have finally created history. The Gottard Base Tunnel is 35.4 miles long, which is a massive feat to accomplish in the world of construction.

It has been reported that completion of the tunnel work will end in the year 2017, and it will be the longest functioning railway tunnel of all time. These men have worked for innumerable man hours, some mile and half below the Alps surface.

The project has been priced at 9.83 billion Swiss francs, and has taken some 14 long years to dig, and will take another 8 years to complete the whole project. The breakthrough was broadcasted live across Europe as it was a remarkable feat to watch. It is reported that after the completion of this project, the trains will run at speeds of 155 mph through the tunnel.
