A delayed period could be a reason to rejoice for some and a reason for stress for some. But apart from the factor of getting pregnant, there are a number of reasons for a delay in a period. Here are some of the reasons that could be responsible for a delayed period apart from pregnancy.

1. Overwork/over thinking– This is one of the most common reasons for a miss period. Overworking leads to stress and that leads to irregular menstrual cycles. Stress causes hormonal imbalance and causes the release of the hormonal cortisol that prevents menstruation.

2. PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) – This is a very common problem in women and is caused to the hormonal imbalances in the body. Some of the major symptoms of PCOS include facial hair, acne or sudden weight gain. This problem can also lead to irregular periods.

3. Birth control pills – Missing periods is one of the major symptoms of the birth control pills. Women who take the pills regularly could take nearly 3 months to return to your normal menstrual cycle.

4. Excessive weight loss – There are a number of women who indulge in heavy workout and dieting that can lead to excessive weight loss and that can be a major reason for delayed periods. It is also called as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate the balance of the body. This could lead to a delayed or missed periods.

These are some of the factors that could be a reason for delayed periods apart from pregnancy. But to be very sure, it is always advised to get yourself checked by a doctor or get a pregnancy test done at home which can help you to confirm. If the home pregnancy test does ambiguous results then you can go for a blood test that would determine the HCG levels for pregnancy.
