Cellulite is a skin alteration, especially in women, that normally presents dimpling, layering and even bumping of the skin around the buttocks, upper region of the arms and lower abdomen. Men too also get cellulite especially when there are more feminine- like hormones in their system than male. This is normally a question of genetics and hereditary factors other than a disorder. Cellulite occurs when pockets of fat protrude into the dermis, which is the skin layer just below the outermost epidermis. This is occasioned by weakening of the tissue bands connecting the muscles to the skin.
In both men and women, there are connective tissues called septa that separate the fat cell chambers from the dermis. These vertical (honey-comb like) septa in women when stressed by factors like little exercise and fluid retention swell up into arc shaped domes. The Septa in men on the contrary are diamond shaped and hence stronger in preventing any fat protrusion and billowing from forming. This explains why cellulite is less common in men.
Cellulite is more of a lifestyle problem than a genetic one. The choices we make and decisions we take can help prevent its occurrence in the first place. Habits like lack of an exercise regimen, high caffeine intake, poor rehydration, bad sleep habits, a poor diet, and smoking are some of the contributing factors that encourage formation of cellulite.
However it’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to keeping cellulite at bay. The following tips will go a long way in redeeming your glowing and healthy skin back.
For women intent on kissing cellulite goodbye, experts recommend a not less than 60 minute of cardio training at least five times a week, coupled with strength training on affected areas. This is one tried and tested way of reducing body fat and includes drills like lunges, sit-ups, press-ups, lower back training (with weights) and butt/thigh-toning squats.
Drink at least eight glasses of water per day and observe a very minimal intake of carbonated, fizzy and sugary drinks. Research has shown that proper hydration boosts the health of the connecting tissues. The more active ladies are especially encouraged to apply this rule religiously.
Garbage in – Garbage Out! Diet experts have confirmed that what you put into your body will manifest on the outside. Folks are implored to avoid sodium and sugary foods and instead focus on meals with high fibre content, vitamins and essential fatty acids to reduce inflammation. These can be found in nuts, cereals and green vegetables.
All said and done, Cellulite is not a disease and therefore ladies don’t feel condemned –Keep your head and esteem up!
