Even though we usually focus on our heart, brain and bones when talking about staying healthy and fit, we need to keep in mind that our eyes need to be taken care of as well. In order to avoid various problems with our eyes as we age, we have to incorporate foods which will be beneficial to them into our diet.
1. Carrots – They contain beta-carotene, which helps in reducing the chances of problems such as cataract and macular degeneration. Carrots have a sweet and mild taste and can be easily added to soups, salads, smoothies, juices, or used as a side veggie.
2. Leafy vegetables – Spinach, collard green and lettuce contain lutein, which can help in preventing cell damage and is found in the back part of our eyes. Leafy green veggies are able to protect retina and should be incorporated into our menu as often as possible, as they are an excellent base for numerous salads and side dishes.
3. Fish – Mackerel, salmon, tuna and sardines are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which protect the small blood vessels in our eyes and people whose diet is rich in these fatty acids are at notably lower risk of developing macular degeneration related to age. In addition to that, fish can prevent inflammation of our eyes.
4. Broccoli – This amazing veggie is well-known for keeping our heart healthy and cancer at bay, but keep in mind it is also good for our eyes. Broccoli is rich in nutrients which decrease the problems related to loss of vision and macular degeneration.
