Dehydration occurs when our body loses more fluids than it takes in. It is a common issue, especially among children. Here are 6 ways how to avoid dehydration.
1. Drink enough water – if you feel thirsty, that means you are already dehydrated. Drink lots of water, as it does not contain any calories and is great for your overall health.
2. Dress appropriately – make sure to dress according to the weather, so that you do not sweat more than needed. If it is a hot, humid day, wear light clothes.
3. Drink up if you are being active – if you are about to participate in a sport or any other activity that takes a lot of energy, make sure to drink up before it. Also drink during the activity, at regular 20-minute intervals.
4. Recognize the usual signs of dehydration – those are: thirst, cracked lips, dry mouth, dizziness, intense headache, nausea, producing less or darker urine.
5. Help yourself, or others, when you recognize these signs – make sure to rest in a cool area and drink plenty of water.
6. Stomach problems are often followed by dehydration – you can lose lots of liquids through vomiting or diarrhea. Even though you may not feel like drinking or eating anything, it is best to take small sips of room-temperature, clear liquids in order to prevent your body from dehydrating.
