Updated Trends: Women who are expecting babies have been warned to monitor their coffee habits, since a new study has found that a single cup can contain unsafe levels of caffeine. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has adviced that pregnant women should not consume more than 300 mg of caffeine per day.
On the other hand, the Food Standards Agency recommends just 200mg per day for pregnant women, while the Royal College Of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has also recommended the figures, but has also said that the women should completely stay away from coffee in the first three months of pregnancy.
Researchers from the Glasgow University analyzed levels in 20 of the coffee shops and found that a coffee shop can contain six times more caffeine than the other. The researchers also found that a single espresso from an independent coffee shop contained 322mg of caffeine, while the other cup from another coffee shop had just 51 mg. The spokeswoman of the RCOG, Dr Daghni Rajasingam said that caffeine levels in pregnancy, can be harmful for the pregnant women as they are more likely to give birth to a smaller baby or can even have a miscarriage. Pregnant women should also be aware that the caffeine content in coffee shops varies from shop to shop.
