Updated Trends: A recent study has suggested that reducing salt intake in the diet may not be helpful in reducing the risk of heart diseases. The study is quite contrary to the news making the rounds, as it was once said that reducing salt intake actually reduces the risk of heart attacks in people.
A diet with low salt reduces blood pressure, which in turn increases the cholesterol levels, hormones and also fat in the blood. These factors are enough to increase the risk of heart diseases.
Dr. Niels Graudal from the University of Copenhagen in Denmark has said that the good and bad effects of salt cancel out on each other, thus it has been observed that the diet plays a relatively less role in the development of the disease.
On the other hand, the study has given a boost to the research over long term effects of the low levels of salt in the diet. According to some recent studies, a moderate reduction of salt in the diet does not decrease the risk of heart diseases. Meanwhile, other experts have said that such findings have forced efforts for a further research and that it is too soon to recommend people to keep their salt levels low. More research is needed in this ground.
