Updated Trends: For several years, medical experts have been telling people to drink at least eight to ten glasses of water to maintain good health. But the advice has been dismissed and rubbished by a recent study that says it is not ‘mandatory’ to drink 8-10 glasses a day to maintain good health.
The mantra has been dismissed in a recent article published in the British Medical Journal. The author of the article, Scottish GP Margaret McCartney had said that there wasn’t any high quality evidence that has been published till now that has said that drinking increased amounts of water had health benefits.
McCartney had insisted and argued that the organizations who had some vested interest as well as the makers of the bottled water had forced the message of ‘eight glasses a day’ message. This had indicated that drinking water was no solution for the multiple health problems.
On the contrary, the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia has said that the adults have to take 10 cups of fluid per day for men, while 8 cups of fluid a day for women. The fluid includes milk, water, other drinks and fluids from food. Melanie McGrice, from the Dietitians Association had said that the rule of eight glasses of water per day was just a general guideline. Melanie added that an individual’s water requirement depends on the amount of activity done by the individual.
