4 Dietary myths related to diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that increases the blood glucose levels in the blood and if it is not treated or managed, then it can affect some of the other crucial organs in the body including the pancreas, kidneys, heart and eyes. Although it is a fact that the disease can be easily managed with the help of dietary and lifestyle changes, there are a number of dietary myths that are associated with the condition. Here we will be breaking those myths.

Myth 1 – Starchy foods should be avoided – The fact is that the body needs a balance of carbohydrates, nutrients as well as fats. Starchy foods contain carbohydrates that are found in rice, bread, wheat and cereal that form a major part of the meal. It is a good source of energy and should be consumed in the right proportion.

Myths 2 – Diatebes is all about pills and medication – Diabetes are of two types – Type 1 and Type 2. Type 2 is the most common type that progresses if not taken care of. Even after the diagnosis, the pancreas are still producing some insulin, but if changes are not made in the lifestyle and diet then the pancreas could completely stop working.

Myth 3 – You are vulnerable to get an illness if you are diabetic – One of the biggest myths is that the condition can make you prone to other illnesses. This all depends on the severity and the condition of diabetes and how well it is managed by the person. This is why doctors suggest people with the condition to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They are also expected to follow precautions to prevent infections and illness.

Myth 4 –Natural supplements can cure diabetes – medically speaking, there is no proper cure for the condition, but it can be well managed. The products that claim that it can cure diabetes is false. There are a products that reduce the diabetic effects but none of them are capable of a cure. Such products on the contrary can interact with the diabetes medications and hinder its effects.
