Trump administration denies permission to US embassy to fly Pride flag

Mike Pence the vice president on June 10, 2019 confirmed that the Trump Administration had denied requests from the U.S. embassies across the globe to display a rainbow flag to celebrate the LGBTQ Pride Month. Pence talked about the rejection from the Trump administration in an interview with a leading daily.

The vice president said, “I’m aware that the State Department indicated that on the flag pole of our American embassies that one flag should fly, and that’s the American flag, and I support that”. The remarks from Pence came days after the news outlet had first reported that the rump administration was rejecting requests from the U.S Embassies to fly the flag outside, which marks the opposite of what was followed during the Obama administration.

Reports said that at least four countries including Germany, Israel, Brazil and Latvia were denied permission to fly flags to show support for the LGBTQ community. Pence added that he and President Trump are proud to be able to serve every American and that both feel that way very passionately. The vice president added, “But when it comes to the American flag pole and American embassies around the world, having one American flag fly, I think is the right decision”.

The administration of Obama had granted the approval to fly the flag outside the flagpoles but the State Department policy has mentioned that the embassies require to ask for a permission from Washington. Before the beginning of Pride, that is celebrated throughout the month of June, Trump had tweeted in support of the LGBTQ community. Trump Tweeted, “As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great Nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation.” The Tweet added that that his administration had launched a global campaign to decriminalize homosexuality and invite all the nations to join the effort.
