Eating nuts can reduce risk of heart diseases in diabetes

Eating a handful of nuts everyday can help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease among people with Type-2 diabetes. Researchers say that Type-2 diabetes can be associated with risk of high cholesterol, heart disease and stroke. The study said that the nuts like almonds, walnuts, cashews, pistachios, pecans, macadamias, hazelnuts and pine nuts were closely associated with reduced risk of coronary events , cardiac death and total mortality compared with peanuts.

The results of the study showed that eating even small amount of nuts had an effect. However, the exact, biological mechanisms of the crunchy food on heart are unclear but the researchers say that nuts appear to improve blood sugar control, blood pressure, metabolism of fats, blood vessel wall function and inflammation. Prakash Deedwania, the professor at the University of California, San Francisco said, “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and a major cause of heart attacks, strokes and disabilities for people who are living with Type-2 diabetes”. The professor added that the efforts to understand the link between the two conditions are important to prevent cardiovascular complications of Type-2diabetes and help people to make informed choices about their health.

The team for the research had used data from 16,217 men and women before and after they were diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes. People who had increased their intake of nuts after being diagnosed with diabetes had 11 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 15 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease.

It was also found that there was 25 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease death and a 27 percent lower risk of all-cause premature death. Every additional serving per week of total nuts was associated with a three percent lower risk of heart disease and six percent lower risk of heart disease death. Adding more nuts to the diet proved to be beneficial probably at any age or stage.
