Skipping breakfast once a week can lead to risk of type 2 diabetes

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. May people consider it has the most important meal of the day and make sure that they do not skip. The latest review of various studies has said that skipping breakfast can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. There were six studies that involved more than 96,000 people out of which 5000 people were already diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

It was found by the German researchers that skipping breakfast for just one day of the week and was associated with 6 percent higher risk of developing diabetes. The risk went up with each additional day and peaked at 55% higher risk of diabetes after skipping breakfast for four to five days every week. Registered dietician, Dalina Soto, while talking to a leading daily said that the meaning of Breakfast is, breaking the fast after a night of sleep.

When a person eats breakfast, it begins the metabolism of the body and changes the way it uses sugar. Instead of storing the sugar in the fats cells the body starts using it for energy. When the sugar passes through the blood the pancreas start to secret the hormone named insulin that helps in regulating the blood sugar levels.

Such a process in everyday life makes it easy for the body to manage the appetite and the hunger levels throughout the day. In terms of both types of diabetes, it becomes difficult to control the amount of sugar in the blood. But in Type 2 diabetes, which the most common type, the body develops a resistance to insulin. When the insulin levels are not checked, the blood sugar levels rise abnormally to high levels and puts the patient at risk of complications with the heart, nerves, eyes and kidneys due to the condition that is known as hyperglycemia. Some of the earlier research has found that obesity is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
