Beyoncé and Jay-Z are finally getting candid about those infidelity rumours. Appearing like a response to Bey’s award-winning groundbreaking album, Lemonade, rap mogul Jay-Z has finally dropped his own album 4:44. And the title track is a brazen response, almost an apology, to his wife and mother of his children, Blue Ivy Carter and the new born twins.
In 4:44 Jay-Z raps about his philandering ways, when he says:
And if my children knew
I don’t even know what I would do
If they ain’t look at me the same
I would probably die with all the shame
And in the closing verse to the track, he says:
You did what with who?
What good is a ménage à trois when you have a soulmate?
You risked that for Blue?
It has been widely speculated that Jay-Z was the only man that Beyoncé has even been with, since her only ex-boyfriend has confessed in an interview that they never slept together. Jay-Z goes on to apologize for marrying her before he understood the depth of commitment. Beyoncé had also famously told Oprah that her first pregnancy had resulted in a miscarriage at five months. Jay-Z talks about this as well on 4:44 when he says:
I apologize for all the stillborns
Cause I wasn’t present, your body wouldn’t accept it
In an interview with iHeartRadio, the rapper, real name Shawn Carter, has spoken about the inspiration behind 4:44. “4:44 is a song that I wrote, and it’s the crux of the album, just right in the middle of the album. And I woke up, literally at 4:44 in the morning, 4:44 AM, to write this song. So it became the title of the album and everything. It’s the title track because it’s such a powerful song, and I just believe one of the best songs I’ve ever written.
The BeyHive, Beyoncé’s global tribe of fans, had bashed a woman called Rachel Roy after they believed she was “Becky with the good hair” that the singer had sung about on Lemonade. There was even that infamous video from a hotel elevator where Beyoncé’s sister, Solange had attacked Jay-Z that went viral.
In 4:44, the 99 Problems rapper continues about his Drunk In Love collaborator:
I never wanted another woman to know
Something about me that you didn’t know
I promised, I cried, I couldn’t hold
I suck at love, I think I need a do-over
I will be emotionally available if I invited you over
I stew over what if you over my sh*t?
I apologize, I womanize
Took for my child to be born to see through a woman’s eyes
Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles
Took me too long for this song.
4:44 dropped on June 30, 2017 and you can listen to the track on Tidal.
