Facebook popularity sinking among US teenagers

A recent survey has shown that social networking giant Facebook is rapidly losing its popularity among the rival internet programmes that exist on the internet in terms of attracting the US teenagers. A report by the Pew Research Centre has mentioned that a sharp drop has been noticed in the share of Facebook, which was once on the top of the trending social network platforms.

It was found that 51 % of the teens in the US between the age 13 to 17 use Facebook when compared to the 85% for YouTube, 72% on Instagram and 69% on Instagram. The Pew survey was last conducted in 2014-2015 when Facebook was leading other social networks with 71 percent on the teen segment. The survey has said that 95% of the teenagers said that they used a smartphone and 45% were online and were almost constantly online.

Monica Anderson, the lead author of the report said, “The social media environment among teens is quite different from what it was just three years ago”. Back then it was the teens who mostly used Facebook and these days their habits are around just a single platform. Facebook is considered as one of the world’s biggest social network and has some two billion regular users.

Other surveys and analysts suggested that the social networking giant is losing its appeal to the younger users due to the rise in the services like Snapchat and Instagram. Another report said that Snapchat is drawing youth away from Facebook at a fast pace than the Facebook-owned Instagram. Research firm e-marketer said that the social network will lose two million US users under the age 24 in 2018. At the same time the social network will also gain some older users. In 2017, investment firm Piper Jaffray had shown that Snapchat is the preferred social network among the US teens as 47 % of them were using the platform.
