It´s often the case that when one enters a room the first impression is formed not by what you see but by what you smell.

It´s always nice to be able to enter into a space that has a wonderful fragrance that is natural, unlike many synthetic products that end up stinging the eyes and nostrils. Of course you could always buy a few packets of storebought potpourri but at the end of the grocery list there´s often not enough laft over to purchase this ¨luxury¨ item. However, it´s easy to make your own amazingly aromatic potpourri at home.

Here we are going to show you how to make three types of DIY potpourri. There´s flower and herb potpourri, potpourri using fruit peels, and scented cotton balls.

    Flower and Herb Potpourri

Gather some aromatic flowers like roses, carnations, jasmine, and lavender. Cut them into small pieces and place them directly in the sun to dry. Once the cut up leaves are dry, spray them lightly with essence of lavender.

Dry herbs that you may want to add are mint, bay leaves, rosemary and sage. Many people also add spices like cinnamon and cardamom to their home made flower and herb potpourri. Grated ginger mixed with essence of vanilla also also vreates a soothing and pleasant scent.

    Fruit Peels

Orange, mandarin, lemon, and lime peels give off a citric aroma that actually neutralizes other foul odors. Simply cut the peels (this releases the scent), put them in a receptacle, and place the receptacle in the room of your home that you wish to perfume.

Soak some cotton balls in your favorite essential oil and let them dry. Once you´ve put the dried cotton balls in the bowl, glass, or other container of your choosing, add a few more drops of the same essential oil. It´s that easy!

So as you can see, there´s no special magic involved in making amazing potpourri. Whether it´s a flower and herb blend, a medley of citric fruit peels, or some scented cotton balls, anybody can make any room in their house smell great.
