Updated Trends: Cholera Spreads Through Haiti, Hurricane Tomas Makes Situations Even Worse
Cholera is on a high toll in Haiti and has spread to many regions, and to make matters more worse, the Hurricane Tomas has likely helped the spread disease to accelerate throughout the country. With heavy rains and floods, people in the city of Port-au-Prince are stuck in the knee deep waters, and there is a scare that the spread of Cholera could be faster because of the flood waters.
It has been said that at least 35000 people have been severely affected with the floods in the region. So survivors of the flood say that rescue workers and the aid workers are not even reaching them to help them out. Cholera spreads only through water and the major problem in the whole of Haiti is the availability of clean drinking water.
The total death toll due to cholera in Haiti has crossed 500, and this is very alarming as the disease spread has now worsened. Aid workers are using many ways to provide proper drinking water to the people who have been hit by Hurricane Haiti.
