Fast food can lead to dementia

For many years fast food has surely been not good for the waistline or even overall health. But now scientists have claimed that fast food can also cause dementia. Experts have opined that unhealthy eating habits as well as lack of exercises can put people at risk of a significant decline in the brain function.

A study was conducted by the Australian National University who found people consuming an extra 650 calories everyday when compared to what we were eating 50 years back. The figure is equal to a burger, fries and a soft drink. The researchers have also said that they have proven a clear link between eating more and brain deterioration.

Lead researcher Professor Nicolas Cherbuin said, “We’ve found strong evidence that people’s unhealthy eating habits and lack of exercise for sustained periods of time puts them at serious risk of developing type 2 diabetes and significant declines in brain function, such as dementia and brain shrinkage. People are eating away at their brain with a really bad fast-food diet and little-to-no exercise.” The research was published in Frontiers in Neuroendocrinology.

The lead researcher also found that the brain health cab decline even earlier in life than it was previously thought, but added that it is in large part to a society that promotes unhealthy lifestyle choices. Cherbuin added that the damage that is done is pretty much irreversible once a person reaches midlife. The researcher has also urged everyone to eat healthy and get in shape as early as possible preferably in childhood but by early adulthood. It has also been noticed that many people who have dementia and other signs of cognitive dysfunction including shrinking brains, have increased their risks throughout life by eating too much of bad food and not exercising enough. This has meant that people’s diet in childhood as well as in adulthood is crucial.
