6 Signs the body lacks magnesium

Our body needs a proper balance of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and fats to maintain good health. Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is responsible in muscular contractions, insulin metabolism, blood pressure and cardiac health. Lack of magnesium can lead to a variety of problems. Here are a few signs that the body can give in case of inadequate levels of magnesium.

1. Nausea – One of the important sign of deficiency of magnesium is nausea. It is usually an early symptom and might not be present in everyone. Nausea can also be a result of other medical problems and even be caused due to stress.

2. Extreme tingling sensation – The National Institutes of Health has listed tingling in the extremities as a possible sign of magnesium deficiency. This happens as magnesium plays a vital role in nerve function. You can notice a tingling sensation in fingertips, toes or the face.

3. Loss of Appetite – Loss of appetite can sometimes signal inadequate levels of the mineral. A very poor appetite might also lead to deficiency as it happens when you are not eating enough food containing the mineral. Spinach, nuts, whole grains, fortified breakfast cereals are some of the foods that contain magnesium.

4. Fatigue – One of the early signs of inadequate levels is fatigue or feeling of sluggishness. But it has to be also noted that lack of energy can be a result of many other health issues also. Get checked by a medical practitioner before you come to a conclusion.

5. Heart problems – When the mineral levels go chronically low, then it can lead to irregular heartbeats. Magnesium plays a vital role in regulating electric signals within the body and helps the heart to function properly.

6. Muscle cramping – The mineral  is an important for proper functioning of body muscles and problems like cramping, tremors and weakness can be a sign of lack of the mineral in the body.
