Disney planning on setting up own streaming service; to get shows off Netflix

Who else is excited at this latest Disney streaming service news?!

Your childhood, adulthood and most likely, old-age-hood (if there is such a term) is about to get the millennial treatment. The company just announced that they are in the final stages of setting up their own streaming service that will stream of course, only Micky Mouse House shows, movies and other entertainment programs. Hell. Yes. Netflix, what?

And speaking of Netflix: The streaming site is soon going to be devoid of any of the company’s releases. So forget about catching up with Star Wars and other animated movies.

The company has released a total of three major announcements today: the first being that the company has paid $1.58 billion to gain majority ownership of BAMTECH, LLC. the streaming platform. Next, the company is going to release an ESPN-esque sports channel streaming service towards 2018 and last but not the least, there will be a brand-new Disney exclusive streaming service that is going to launch in 2019. Until then, you can still Netflix & Chill.

No more Netflix & Chill?

According to a statement posted on the company’s official website, “The new Disney-branded service will become the exclusive home in the U.S. for subscription-video-on-demand viewing of the newest live action and animated movies from Disney and Pixar, beginning with the 2019 theatrical slate, which includes Toy Story 4, the sequel to Frozen, and The Lion King from Disney live action, along with other highly anticipated movies.”

Further, the statement added, “Disney will end its distribution agreement with Netflix for subscription streaming of new releases, beginning with the 2019 calendar year theatrical slate.”

So, imagine being able to stream unlimited content from company-owned subsidiaries like Pixar, Disney XD, Disney Junior and the Disney Channel!

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, Robert A Iger said, “The media landscape is increasingly defined by direct relationships between content creators and consumers, and our control of BAMTech’s full array of innovative technology will give us the power to forge those connections, along with the flexibility to quickly adapt to shifts in the market.”

He continued, “The acquisition and the launch of our direct-to-customer services mark an entirely new growth strategy for the Company, one that takes advantage of the incredible opportunity that changing technology provides us to leverage the strength of our great brands.”
