Kim Kardashian West, reality TV star and social media personality, was in the news recently for posting a throwback nude selfie of herself to her Instagram account. Though this is nothing new for the star, as she has posted such images in the past as well and appeared on the cover of magazines in the buff, this time around there has been more criticism of her than praise.
The first ones on the list to raise their voices in opposition to her latest stunt is veteran actress and comedienne, Bette Midler. In a post that she later stated was meant to be taken as a joke, she said: “If Kim wants us to see a part of her we’ve never seen, she’s gonna have to swallow the camera.”
Rising acting star, Chloe Moretz was the next to admonish Kim about the selfie, posting: “I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them that we have so much more to offer than just our bodies.”
However, the reality star lashed back at both of them with extremely rude and insulting tweets, implying that Bette Midler is way too old and Chloe Moretz is an unknown starlet herself. She also stated in another tweet: “Sorry I’m late to the party guys I was busy cashing my 80 million video game check & transferring 53 million to our joint account.”
Above the narcissistic I’m-better-than-you-because-I-have-a-fat-bank-account rant, she penned an open letter on her website. Read it here.
However, what is the controversy here? There are hundreds of celebrities, men and women, who for decades now have been posing naked, from Marilyn Monroe to Demi Lovato. How is it that only Kardashian is facing such backlash?
The reason could stem from the fact that Kim was a nobody before her sex tape with then boyfriend, rapper Ray J came out. It was tacky to say the least. Having said that, instead of redeeming herself by achieving something concrete, she goes on to have 2 failed marriages by the age of 30 and then pose naked several times after birthing her first and second children. Her only “achievement” can be counted as just being everywhere, all the time on social media. That. Is. It.
Ignorant public figures like Kardashian may think that taking off their clothes is “empowering”, but has she stopped to understand that while she is protected behind a gated community and security round-the-clock, there are regular women who face perverts on the street and have to bear the brunt of her attitude that women need to be looked at as “sexy” and nothing else.
Another celeb who just joined the conversation is singer and activist, Pink, who tweeted: “Shout out to all of the women, across the world, using their brains, their strength, their work ethic, their talent, their ‘magic’ that they were born with, that only they possess. It may not ever bring you as much ‘attention’ or bank notes as using your body, your sex, your tits and asses, but women like you don’t need that kind of ‘attention.’ In the quiet moments, you will feel something deeper than the fleeting excitement resulting from attention, you will feel something called pride and self respect. Keep on resisting the urge to cave. You’ll never have to make silly excuses for yourself.” Read more on this story.
